The Liverpool-rooted collective Bonnacons of Doom began as an enigmatic outfit shaped by experimental theatrical presentations before channeling those energies into recorded works steeped in ritualistic psych rock and drone textures. After gradual refinement, the ensemble—drawing members from Mugstar, Forest Swords, Jarvis Cocker's band, and Youthmovies—issued its self-titled debut full-length in 2018.

The group formed in 2013 expressly to stage isolated live events. Its first appearance unfolded in a public square adjacent to Liverpool's Foundation for Art and Technology, where guitar feedback intertwined with looped radio transmissions. Subsequent outings ranged from collaborations with a Cathedral choir to virtual reality setups. Anchored by Jason Stoll of Mugstar and vocalist Kate Smith amid a rotating cast of concealed associates, the performers adopted black robes and metallic masks to obscure individual identities. This veil stemmed from certain participants' background in audiovisual work and an emphasis on unified group presence over personal recognition.

Smith's arrival in 2015 prompted a shift toward studio activity, yielding a pair of 7" singles on Stoll's experimental imprint God Unknown in 2016. The material was then tracked at MJ Hookworms' Suburban Home Studio for the first album. Upon finishing, the band forwarded the recordings solely to Rocket Recordings, whose roster of Gnod and Goat aligned with the shamanistic vocals and psychedelic soundscapes on display; the label issued the album in 2018.
