Biography
Distinguished from the drummer Philly Joe Jones, guitarist Ivan Joseph "Boogaloo Joe" Jones cut multiple Prestige LPs in a soul-jazz style across the late '60s and early '70s. Beyond directing his own ensemble solely for studio dates, Jones also appeared alongside Wild Bill Davis, Houston Person, and Willis Jackson. Those sessions yield reliable though modest groove jazz that opens ample space for saxophones and organ while spotlighting Jones's own fusion of bop and R&B phrasing. Supporting players on the Boogaloo albums include Rusty Bryant, Charles Earland, and ace soul and jazz session drummer Bernard Purdie.
