Biography
Following his formative years performing alongside Ralph Stanley, the Country Gentlemen, and J.D. Crowe & the New South, Ricky Skaggs assembled Boone Creek as his first group to front. He launched the ensemble in 1977 at the age of 23. Despite his youth, Skaggs had already collaborated with leading figures across bluegrass circles, embracing both the traditional style honed with Stanley and the forward-leaning newgrass approach developed with the Country Gentlemen and Crowe. Through Boone Creek he sought to blend a progressive sensibility with the core elements of traditional bluegrass. Electric guitar, drums, and piano were therefore incorporated into the standard acoustic lineup to realize that hybrid sound.
The band’s self-titled debut appeared in 1977 and was succeeded shortly afterward by One Way Track in early 1978. Once that second album was out, Skaggs disbanded the group and entered Emmylou Harris’ Hot Band. Solo success followed his departure from Harris in the early ’80s.
