Biography
Residing in Israel, Boris Malkovsky composes music and performs on piano as well as bayan, the button accordion. Through John Zorn’s Tzadik label he issued the album Time Petah-Tiqva in 2007. Blending Jewish traditional themes and jazz improvisation with Gypsy and classical motifs, the work had first been requested by the Tel Aviv Chamber Music Ensemble so that members of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra could present it at a wedding celebration. Malkovsky later enlarged the score for the Tzadik edition, which showcases his bayan alongside Ora Boazson on contrabass and the Israel Contemporary String Quartet—cellist Hilla Epstein, violinists Hadas Fabricant and Tali Goldberg, and viola player Amelia Hollander.
