Box Set formed in 1991 as a five-piece alterna-rock outfit whose sound layers upbeat strands of rootsy Americana into post-jangle pop. Frontman and guitarist Jim Brunberg first connected with acoustic guitarist Jeff Pehrson at an open mic night in San Francisco; the two quickly recognized a shared musical vision, left their day jobs, and began working the cafe circuit across California. Bassist Chad Heise, drummer Mark Abbott, and organist Sam Johnston completed the group soon afterward.

Three independent albums appeared in the mid-'90s and drew widespread media praise. Billboard singled out the self-titled 1994 debut, while 1995's 27 brought Group of the Year honors from the National Academy of Songwriters. Two years after that distinction, Box Set earned two Bammies for the critically acclaimed third album Meantime and secured a deal with Capricorn/Polygram, leading to 1998's Thread produced by Joe Chicarelli, whose prior credits include Tori Amos, American Music Club, and Frank Zappa. The pop-happy fourth studio album Lemonade arrived two years later.
