Biography
Originating in San Antonio, Texas, Boxcar Satan fuses jagged guitar noise with raw blues, free jazz, and no wave sonic wanderlust, forging a combustible blend that has established the group among the Lone Star State’s most esteemed underground acts. Guitarist and vocalist Sanford Allen and bassist Patrick Sane launched the project in 1990 while still active in Evil Mothers, initially conceiving it merely as an occasional outlet for scattered live dates and a handful of tracks destined for singles or compilations. Once they departed Evil Mothers, however, Allen and Sane resolved to develop Boxcar Satan as a primary endeavor; the arrival of drummer Mike Smith anchored the lineup, prompting an increase in concert appearances that culminated in the band’s debut single appearing in 1996. The trio finished its first full-length effort, Days Before the Flood, in 1999, placing the album with the independent Compulsive Records imprint. Two years afterward, Dogfingers Recordings issued the widely praised successor Crooked Mile March.
