Boxstep augmented Galaxie 500’s trademark reverb-heavy sprawl through the addition of strings, fluid dynamic shifts, and a distinctly Appalachian sensibility. During the late ’90s the Pittsburgh-based ensemble ranked among several acts that adopted a restrained yet forceful stance toward conventional rock forms. Eric Graf on vocals and guitar, David Wallace on guitar, Greg Cislon on drums, and TR Daddario on bass assembled the group in 1999. Within the following twelve months Paul Labrise joined on keyboards, Erin Hutter contributed vocals and violin, Sarah Siplak supplied additional vocals, and Jackie Dempsey added accordion. Locally the quartet’s ascent approached meteoric velocity, progressing from opening spots at thinly attended venues during early spring to supporting major minor Luna by August. Chicago indie Overcoat issued the band’s first album, The Faces All Look On, in 2001; the self-released By Now Even the Trees appeared the next year.
