Biography
Before forming Boys Forever to write and perform his own songs, Patrick Doyle had already assembled an extensive résumé. During the mid-2000s he helped launch the Glaswegian indie pop outfit the Royal We on guitar. After the band issued its outstanding mini-album on the Geographic label in 2007, it disbanded. Doyle then reunited with some of the same members in Sexy Kids, which delivered the classic noise pop single "Sisters Are Forever" on the U.S. indie pop label Slumberland in 2008. That same year he switched to bass and joined Franz Ferdinand drummer Paul Thomson in the angular pop group Correcto, whose lone album appeared on Domino. Both projects proved short-lived, so in 2009 Doyle linked up with former Royal We and Sexy Kids guitarist Roxanne Clifford plus ex-Your Twenties guitarist James Hoare to create Veronica Falls. He moved behind the drums for the new band and shared backing-vocal duties with Hoare. Veronica Falls released a series of singles in its first two years, followed by the well-received albums Veronica Falls in 2011 and Waiting for Something to Happen in 2013, both on Slumberland. After the touring cycle for the second album ended in mid-2014, the group entered hiatus and its members turned to solo work. Early in 2015 Doyle began writing material on an old four-track recorder, handling every part himself. Under the name Boys Forever he signed with the Amour Foo label and released the single "Poisonous" in January 2016. Later that month he assembled a live lineup with Helen Skinner on bass and longtime colleague Paul Thomson on drums for two performances at Glasgow’s Old Hairdresser. The following month the same group, now featuring Andy Knowles on drums, played at the Glory in London; recordings from both shows were issued on a limited-edition cassette. Doyle recorded the self-titled Boys Forever album partly at home and partly in Los Angeles before Amour Foo released it in August 2016. Doyle died in March 2018 at the age of 32.
