Biography
Braaxtaal produces some of the Netherlands' boldest sounds by matching an improvisational exchange between synthesizer and percussion with lyrics that vocalist and sound poet Jaap Blonk assembles from fragments of advertisements, catalogues, and 16th-century alchemists' writings. The trio pushed this method further in 2000 on the album Dworr Buun, whose lyrics, authored by Blonk, appear entirely in a fantasy language. Braaxtaal formed in 1987 and at first set its pieces to the poetry of Dutch poet Lucebert, yet from 1990 onward limited itself exclusively to Blonk's texts. Synthesizer player Rob Daenen had previously performed with Weather Report-influenced bands, whereas percussionist Theo Bodewes took part in Amsterdam's free punk/wave scene during the 1980s.
