Brainwaltzera’s moniker directly evokes the Braindance category that Rephlex once coined for itself, and the unidentified producer’s output would have slotted seamlessly onto the Aphex Twin-run imprint at any moment across its two-decade-plus existence. Polyphonic analog synthesizers, samples, field recordings, and atypical sonic materials—including a customized dot-matrix printer—form the basis of the tracks, which move between dreamy downtempo passages and denser, abrasive drill’n’bass constructions. The material is organized around the theme of memory, particularly the way certain sounds and scents can instantly return a listener to a precise moment in the past. The project surfaced in 2016 via the self-released Marzipan EP, a limited run of three hundred copies that quickly disappeared and drew the attention of IDM listeners, Aphex Twin among them. Film issued Aescoba the following year, after which Analogical Force presented Outdives. Later in 2017 the label released the full-length Poly-Ana, whose packaging incorporated custom scents developed with Berlin fragrance house Atelier Oblique and earned widespread praise; the year closed with a Remix EP containing a contribution from Rephlex veteran Luke Vibert. Brainwaltzera returned in early 2019 with the EP Epi-Log.
