Glasgow post-punk revivalists Bricolage came together in 2005, launching into pop that drew heavily on the Postcard aesthetic—most notably Orange Juice—alongside the incisive edge associated with Vic Godard & the Subway Sect. The lineup featured Graham Wann and Wallace Meek handling guitar and vocals, Darren Cameron covering bass, keys, and vocals, and Colin Kearney on drums. That summer the quartet issued its debut single, “Footsteps,” through the Scottish imprint Creeping Bent. At roughly the same moment Kearney joined the much-hyped Royal We, a move that only heightened the mounting attention already surrounding Bricolage. Two further singles appeared in 2007: “Looting Takes the Waiting Out of Wanting” on Fantastic Plastic Records and “The Waltzers” on Memphis Industries. Produced by Stephen Lironi of Scottish pop heroes Altered Images, the band’s self-titled debut album reached stores via Creeping Bent in the U.K. during January 2009 and via Slumberland in the U.S. five months later.
