A survivor of the 2000s teen-pop battles, Brit Smith ranks among the era's more improbable holdovers. Long after an initial solo bid following her split from identical twin Alex, she scored an unforeseen viral breakout in 2024 when JoJo Siwa unearthed an earlier Brit recording titled "Karma." Retitled "Karma's a Bitch," Smith's original outpaced Siwa's cover and restored her to public view.

Born December 3, 1985, in Wilton, Connecticut, Brit and Alex Smith entered show business at age three with roles on the long-running soap One Life to Live. Modeling gigs followed in their teens, yet music soon took precedence; by eighteen they focused exclusively on pop. Signed to Hometown/Interscope, the pair debuted on the 2008 Step Up 2: The Streets soundtrack with "Let It Go." Teaming with producers Dallas Austin and Tricky Stewart, they completed an album, though only "Get What I Want" surfaced in 2010 and drew scant notice. The duo disbanded shortly afterward.

While Alex pursued college, Brit joined Jive Records under the name Matisse and issued the 2010 single "Better Than Her," which featured Akon and reached Billboard's Hot Dance Airplay chart. Subsequent label mergers led to the shelving of her Matisse project. Reverting to Brit Smith, she released "Provocative (hiDhi)" featuring will.i.am., yet its lack of impact prompted her withdrawal from music.

Nearly ten years later, JoJo Siwa revived "Karma," a Rock Mafia composition Smith had first recorded. Once Smith's version circulated online, it unexpectedly eclipsed Siwa's new take. The resulting traction for "Karma's a Bitch" revived Brit Smith's career, prompting the May release of "Chocolates and Lies" a month after the track's viral surge.
