Biography
Brita Beseth, a native of California, first reached mainstream pop listeners after an unplanned introduction to an internet entrepreneur during a concert tour with the all-female vocal ensemble from the University of Berkley. While attending the university she majored in chemical engineering, even though her deepest ambition had always been to devote herself entirely to songwriting and performing. Classical piano lessons began for her at age three, and she later took starring roles in school stage productions. To most observers she came across as an analytical athlete drawn to scientific subjects, yet she maintained a hidden habit of singing solely for herself. In college she entered the institution’s a cappella women’s group seeking relief from her technical studies. On one of the ensemble’s tours, where she sang lead, she met an early investor in MP3 technology. With only one course left before graduation she withdrew from the university to accept his invitation to become the first recording artist financed through the internet, an effort intended to merge online platforms with the music business. Her debut EP, Britaworld.com, appeared in 2000 and was supported by a substantial advertising and online promotion campaign.
