Biography
The British Murder Boys duo pushed the limits of the British techno landscape through their provocative releases and dynamic performances during the initial years of the 2000s. Following a short hiatus declared in 2015, the artists reunited for appearances at various festivals before issuing their debut full-length record in 2024.
Formed by Birmingham natives Karl “Regis” O’Connor and Anthony “Surgeon” Child, who had collaborated since the early 1990s, the project emerged from their shared history. Signed to the Downwards Records imprint that Regis helped establish, the pair helped shape the Birmingham sound by blending stark, minimalist European elements with the hypnotic atmospheres of Chicago house music. Labeling themselves “Britain’s best-loved, absurdist space-rock duo,” they debuted with the 2003 12-inch “Learn Your Lesson.” Subsequent releases over the following two years included “Don’t Give Way to Fear,” “Fist,” “Father Loves Us,” and “All the Saints Have Been Hung.” Their live presentations stood out due to unconventional setups, with Regis handling vocals and Surgeon managing the electronic components, complemented by bold visual projections that challenged the genre's conventional restraint.
Although the 2012 single “Where Pail Limbs Lie” marked their return after a seven-year absence, the duo announced the project's end in 2015 via a self-titled compilation encompassing all their studio work and a concluding performance in Tokyo. The allure persisted, however, leading them to larger stages afterward. They began issuing recordings of notable concerts themselves, such as Fire in the Still Air from their 2018 Berlin Atonal set and a 2004 Supersonic Festival appearance in Birmingham made available in 2020. That year also saw the emergence of their rendition of Lou Reed's “Real Good Time Together.” For their inaugural collection of new compositions, Active Agents and House Boys arrived in 2024, embracing a more primal, 1990s-rooted techno approach instead of the industrial leanings from their earlier period.
