Brittany Davis channels their own marginalized viewpoints through a layered blend of rap, funk, and alternative R&B on solo recordings, while also serving as multi-instrumentalist, producer, and member of the genre-defying indie rock outfit Painted Shield. After a chaotic early life that brought the Kansas City native to Seattle, they received an invitation to join Painted Shield, the side project initiated by Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard, whose Loosegroove imprint later issued Davis’ first solo EP, I Choose to Live. The politically charged and deeply personal full-length debut Image Issues arrived in 2024, showcasing sophisticated arrangements throughout.

Davis entered the world blind in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1994 and was raised by a maternal grandmother once their mother was incarcerated when Davis was three. An exceptional sensitivity to sound, later recognized as synesthesia, emerged early, and Davis began performing music in church or at home for friends while still young. Family encouragement led to four years of piano academy training during grade school. At age twelve, Davis’s father—who had supported their musical growth—was murdered. Following her release from prison, Davis’s mother arranged for them to relocate to Seattle with relatives in pursuit of a new beginning.

In Seattle, Davis devoted nearly every day to synthesizer-based composition, yet high school brought repeated upheaval through dozens of moves. Local recognition grew via steady restaurant performances and festival appearances. A 2019 introduction to Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard, facilitated by a mutual acquaintance, led to studio sessions that prompted Davis to join Gossard, drummer Matt Chamberlain, and singer-songwriter Mason Jennings in Painted Shield. The group merged alt-rock, rootsy vocals, and aggressive industrial keyboard textures on its self-titled 2020 debut. Davis contributed keyboards and backing vocals to the follow-up, Painted Shield 2, issued in 2022, the same year Loosegroove released the solo EP I Choose to Live.

Image Issues, Davis’s first full-length effort, confronted family trauma, mass incarceration, and the challenges of growing up blind, Black, and non-binary in America, with every instrument performed by Davis alone. Co-produced by Josh Evans of Pearl Jam, the album appeared on Loosegroove in March 2024.
