Brown & Gray bring an international dimension to country sounds as a British-American duo of vocalists and songwriters whose individual paths have crossed both country and pop landscapes. Kaci Brown and Sam Gray each built solo careers before their initial joint effort accelerated their momentum. Issued in 2017, “Top Down” unveiled their signature blend of country-inflected melodies, memorable choruses, dance-oriented grooves, and layered harmonies. The single connected with listeners through radio and streaming outlets, elevating the pair’s profile ahead of the 2018 EP Salt in the Coffee.

The partnership unites Kaci Brown and Sam Gray. Born in 1988 in Sulphur Springs, Texas, Brown started performing young through church singing and beauty pageants, earning the title Little Miss Texas Grand Talent at age ten. At eleven she attended the Fan Fair CMA Music Festival alongside her grandmother and returned intent on a country career. The family relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, the following year; there Brown cut a demo and began composing songs. She secured a publishing contract at thirteen with Still Working Music, co-founded by Barbara Orbison, widow of Roy Orbison, becoming the youngest registrant with ASCAP. At fifteen her trajectory shifted after meeting producer and songwriter Toby Gad, who steered her toward pop. Brown joined Interscope Records and issued her debut album, Instigator, in 2005, supporting it with opening dates on a Backstreet Boys tour. Although the record met modest success, she later concentrated on songwriting, supplying material for Pixie Lott, Greyson Chance, and Queensberry.

Sam Gray was born in Hull, East Yorkshire, England. His father played piano and his older sister performed classical vocals; Gray began with violin in his school orchestra before adding guitar and keyboards. He eventually moved to Manchester, where he gained recognition as a performer and songwriter. After discovery by former drummer turned manager Steve White, Gray signed with Transmission Records as an artist and Notting Hill Music as a composer. He released two Transmission albums—2011’s Brighter Day and 2013’s Too Much of a Good Thing—while earning airplay for “Cartwheel Queen,” “Two Hearts,” and “This Girl.” Gray also placed songs with Hardwell, Abi Phillips, Ben Saunders, and Nile Rodgers. Recording as JUIC3BOX, he wrote and produced the Alice France duet “True Love.”

Although Gray’s roots lay in funk, R&B, and pop, he also gravitated toward country artists ranging from Johnny Cash to Shania Twain. At a songwriting camp he conceived a track merging dance beats, a country melody, and a sing-along chorus. His manager noted the demo needed a stronger country vocal; Gray was then paired with Brown, and the two found immediate creative alignment. As Brown & Gray they rerecorded the song as “Top Down,” releasing it in mid-2017. The track amassed more than three million streams and over two million views for its official video. Following that breakthrough, the duo toured headline shows and performed at the Stagecoach Festival in Indio, California. Salt in the Coffee, a five-track EP containing “Top Down” and four additional numbers, appeared in June 2018.
