Biography
Brown Spirits, an Australian ensemble, deliver instrumental psychedelia that pulses with raw energy, drawing from Krautrock, progressive rock, jazz fusion, and deep funk grooves. Home recordings captured onto quarter-inch tape preserve their potent, fluid rhythm section alongside analog synthesizers and wah-wah-drenched lead guitar lines. Prior to inking a deal with Soul Jazz Records, the outfit put out a series of three albums. That London-based label brought forth Solitary Transmissions during 2023 and Cosmic Seeds during 2025.
Drummer Agostino Soldati joined forces with multi-instrumentalist Tim Wold—both veterans of the garage rock outfit Russian Roulettes along with various other projects—to establish the group in Coburg, Victoria, a Melbourne suburb. On the debut LP, Wold handled guitars, bass, organ, synthesizer, and tape effects; Mikey Young handled mastering duties ahead of its 2017 release via Clostridium Records in Germany on vinyl and Off the Hip Records in Melbourne on compact disc. Additional sitar parts from Wold appear on the 2020 releases Vol. 2 and Vol. 3. Clostridium issued Vol. 3 ahead of the band's own Lysergic Library putting out Vol. 2. After that initial trilogy, longtime live bassist Ash Buscombe began contributing to recordings. Brown Spirits then aligned with London's Soul Jazz Records, which preceded the 2023 album Solitary Transmissions with limited-edition 7-inch singles titled "Dead End Exits" and "Space Race." Another pair of limited singles, "Fault Lines" and "Mindrocker," surfaced in 2024 before Cosmic Seeds emerged in early 2025.
