Biography
Born in separate corners of the United States, the three Brock sisters—Bobbe (Josephine Brock, 28 November 1901, Riverton, Iowa, d. 2 May 1999, Glen Falls, New York), Kathlyn (Kathleen Brock, 14 June 1906, Winchester, Kentucky, d. 27 August 1988, New York), and Lorayne (Eunice Brock, 11 November 1898, Memphis, Tennessee, d. 14 June 1993, Los Angeles, California)—grew up together in Edmonton, Canada. Adopting the stage name Brox, they entered professional entertainment during the early 1920s through a series of Broadway engagements that included the Music Box Revue in 1921, 1923, and 1924, followed by the 1927 edition of the Ziegfeld Follies. Their first recordings appeared on Brunswick Records, after which the trio secured an exclusive contract with Victor Records. Like many stage performers of the period, they moved briefly into motion pictures, most notably appearing in the popular 1930 release The King Of Jazz. Although they enjoyed considerable success at the time, their close-harmony style lacked the inventive approach shown by the Boswell Sisters, who were active concurrently, and it also lacked the energetic spirit later displayed by the Andrews Sisters. In 1969 Bobbe Brox wed songwriter Jimmy Van Heusen.
