Scotland's Buffet Lunch surfaced toward the end of the 2010s through two EPs that applied a playful, clattering approach to angular, spoke-sung post-punk. The band's first full-length album, The Power of Rocks, arrived in 2021.

What began as the solo endeavor of sprechgesang-styled vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Perry O'Bray (fka Smooth Dad) had grown by the January 2019 release of The Snail EP to encompass lead guitarist John Muir, bassist Neil Robinson, drummer Luke Moran, and synth/woodwind contributor David MacDonald. London-based Permanent Slump issued that EP, followed in November 2019 by the label's release of Snap!, which appeared without MacDonald. During this period the group maintained a steady schedule of Scottish performances alongside Kaputt, Irma Vep, and Robert Sotelo.

For its debut album the foursome shifted to Upset the Rhythm. The Power of Rocks was tracked chiefly in a cottage studio in Argyll during March 2020, with Robinson serving as engineer; when the record emerged in May 2021 it incorporated two songs written later by O'Bray and singer Jayne Dent (Me Lost Me).
