Biography
Burgess Meredith attained widespread renown, spanning both national and global audiences, across three separate eras of his career. Younger television audiences spanning one or two generations recognized him foremost as The Penguin from the Batman television series (1966-1969), while their parents knew him as an eccentric, outspoken, and prodigiously talented theater actor; viewers of the 1970s and 1980s, by contrast, associated him most closely with the role of Mickey, Rocky Balboa's trainer across the first three Rocky movies. For many years he also supplied the voice in commercials for Skippy Peanut Butter and United Airlines. In the 1950s he joined Pete Seeger, Jo Mapes, John Henry Faulk, and numerous other outspoken performers on the blacklist, which barred him from Hollywood films and American television screens; as a result he appeared on stage and in motion pictures in England, where he took on directing duties as well. His distinctively expressive voice drew him into recording work during the 1950s and early 1960s, chiefly in the capacities of speaker, actor, and narrator.
