Buried Inside, hailing from Ottawa in Canada, fuse the intensity of heavy metal and hardcore with the compositional aspirations found in progressive rock, echoing the approach of Neurosis and Isis. Established initially in 1997, the band honed its musical approach through a pair of self-released records—In and Of the Self from 1999 and Suspect Symmetry from 2001—while maintaining a rigorous schedule of performances alongside acts such as Converge, The End, Unearth, and additional groups. These activities drew the notice of the prominent metal label Relapse Records, which issued the band's subsequent work, the 2005 single-track, 40-minute conceptual album Chronoclast. During the sessions for that recording, Buried Inside included vocalist Nicholas A. Shaw, guitarists Andrew Tweedy and Matias Palacios-Hardy, bassist Stephen A. Martin, along with drummer Michael B. Godbout.
