Butterglory operates as a lo-fi indie-rock duo based in Lawrence, KS after time spent in California, crafting tuneful yet skewed tracks in the vein of Pavement, early Yo La Tengo, and the Archers of Loaf. Additional musicians join the pair during live performances to complete the arrangements. Their material frequently drifts into skronk and feedback only to snap back into pop gems moments later. Matt Suggs and Debby Vander Wall issued the duo’s first full-length, Crumble, in 1994. Downed arrived afterward as a singles collection drawn from four 7" EPs the pair had recorded. Although assembled from disparate sources, the album maintains strength and functions as a unified whole. Bassist Stephen Naron joined as a permanent member soon after. The expanded lineup, combined with growing experience, produced the more mature and crafted sound of 1996’s Are You Building a Temple in Heaven. That same year brought the three-song EP She’s Got the Akshun, followed by the LP Rat Tat Tat in 1997. Matt Suggs issued the solo album Golden Days Before They End in 2000.
