Buxton, a Houston-based ensemble, took shape in the latter part of the 2000s. The group forged a thoughtful blend of folk, rock, and psych-inflected Americana. After issuing a pair of favorably received independent albums, the outfit secured a spot on the New West Records roster in 2012. Their richly layered, arid textures and sturdy songcraft drew praise and wider attention through increasingly ambitious later projects, notably Half a Native in 2015 and Stay Out Late in 2018.

The band originated in La Porte, Texas, a Gulf of Mexico community located roughly 25 miles east of Houston. Guitarist, vocalist, and chief songwriter Sergio Trevino launched the project in 2003 after his younger sister introduced him to multi-instrumentalist Jason Willis, who handles guitar, mandolin, pedal steel, and banjo, as well as bassist Chris Wise. The three began rehearsing together and soon started performing at local venues in La Porte. In 2006 they recorded and self-released their debut album, Red Follows Red. Sales proved sufficient to recoup production costs, after which the musicians relocated to Houston in search of greater visibility.

By 2009 the lineup had grown into a quartet with the arrival of drummer Justin Terrell, enabling the release of the more conceptually ambitious second album, A Family Light. Texas music outlets responded with strong reviews, and the group began touring throughout the state plus the Southwest and West Coast. Early in 2010 guitarist and keyboardist Austin Sepulvado joined to expand the sonic palette. Before the year ended, Trevino brought in fan Haley Barnes on keyboards and harmony vocals, establishing Buxton as a six-piece.

In 2011 the celebrated independent roots label New West Records expressed interest, leading to a recording agreement. The company issued the band’s third album, Nothing Here Seems Strange, in January 2012. Half a Native, their 2015 fourth album, ventured into fresh sonic territory with a more atmospheric and expansive approach to their gritty, country-tinged rock. Arriving in 2018, Stay Out Late maintained that direction while introducing greater pop sensibility through prominent keyboard work.
