Si (Simon) Begg, a London-based experimental musician, participates in the Cabbage Head artist collective that originated in 1990 inside the Midlands town of Leamington Spa and also encompasses noted dance producers Cristian Vogel and Tim Wright of Germ. Apart from a few cassette-only projects tied to Cabbage Head, active releases began only in 1995, yet the catalog issued under the guises Cabbageboy, Bigfoot, Buckfunk 3000 and his own name has already reached nearly a dozen titles, among them EPs on Tresor, Ntone, Eukatech, Language and Chrome.

A tireless experimenter who routinely ignores borders, Begg constantly manipulates the norms of ambient, techno and drum'n'bass, especially in Cabbageboy material, producing results that frequently escape standard classification. Work from him and his associates Vogel, Wright and Dave Clark nevertheless receives strong support inside the continental European techno community, prompting appearances on key labels such as Tresor, Mille Plateaux and MP's Chrome subsidiary. Domestic recognition has likewise expanded through a pair of Ntone releases on the Ninja Tune offshoot, introducing his idiosyncratic techniques to listeners less anchored in techno.

Introduced to Cristian Vogel by a mutual acquaintance, Begg entered Cabbage Head after absorbing progressive music from prog rock and metal through electro and free jazz during his teens. Following several cassette projects and a number of live events, Vogel and Begg launched the Mosquito label to issue dancefloor tracks carrying a strong dose of eccentricity. Although Begg issued none of his own material on Mosquito, the interval enabled him to construct a studio, now located in Harrow in northwest London, and to acquire A&R and label-management skills that he later applied when starting his own imprint, Noodles, at the beginning of 1997.

Relocating to London in the mid-'90s placed him in contact with Coldcut's Jonathon Moore and Matt Black through the local scene. His first Cabbageboy EP, Sausage Doctor, appeared on their Ntone label in 1995 and was followed the next year by the Planets EP. The Vogel connection also secured a 12-inch on the selective Tresor roster plus compilation contributions for Force Inc., K7, Kickin' and Mille Plateaux. Buckfunk 3000 material has surfaced on Moody Boy Tony Thorpe's Crammed subsidiary Language, which released the debut album in early 1998; Genetically Modified appeared a year later.
