Caged Heat took shape in Boston in 1997 under the leadership of Jill Kurtz, whose command of guitar, vocals, and harmonica anchored the project. The group channeled high-energy punk rock laced with blues influences yet endured repeated roster shifts that left only its founder and frontwoman in place. Having already played with Ashera, Kurtz put together an early configuration that included bassist Kate Fred and drummer Chris Negrette. Although the lineup held together only briefly, it still produced several recordings. A fresh combination soon followed, featuring Lee Zoumas on guitar, Chris Ando on bass, and Scott Hansen on drums; this version tracked additional material and logged numerous live appearances. In 1999 the band issued its debut album, Serious Action, through Ruff Stuff Records. Rob Ignazio produced the record, which earned steady airplay on New England stations and highlighted the group’s clean, unadorned approach. Kyle Keenan later joined on lead guitar, arriving just before Kurtz turned greater attention to a solo career. Despite her reduced involvement, Caged Heat kept performing as a full band with Dustin Brown, Aaron Gill, and Devon Irish.
