Biography
In the 2010s, singer Cal Shapiro teamed with producer Rob Resnick to achieve prominence in the electronic pop-rap duo Timeflies. The New York native, recognized for his smooth vocal style, eventually stepped out on his own under the simplified name Cal and issued his first solo project, the 2019 EP The Identity Crisis: Side A.
Shapiro developed his singing and freestyling abilities as a teenager and maintained that musical focus while studying at Tufts University in Boston, where he first crossed paths with Resnick. The pair initially performed together in a campus funk band called the Ride before launching the duo Timeflies.
Their 2011 debut release, The Scotch Tape—titled in reference to Shapiro’s affinity for the whiskey—combined his agile lyricism and fluid vocals with Resnick’s rhythm-oriented productions and secured a recording contract with Island/Def Jam. Mainstream visibility followed when the 2014 major-label album After Hours reached number eight on the Billboard charts, earning Shapiro a Popdust nomination for Next Pop Superstar.
After releasing one more album, an EP, and several singles, the two artists each declared intentions to pursue individual work. Continuing in an electronic-pop direction, Shapiro, now performing simply as Cal, delivered the 2019 EP The Identity Crisis: Side A.
