Biography
Caleb Landry Jones, born in Garland, Texas, grew up among generations of fiddlers yet turned away from that family tradition toward the expansive pop explorations of the Beatles' White Album and the fragmented solo psychedelia Syd Barrett pursued after leaving Pink Floyd. Although film roles in Get Out and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri brought him wider recognition as an actor, he continued developing his music by laying down hundreds of D.I.Y. demos inside his parents' barn; director and musician Jim Jarmusch eventually heard some of those recordings and urged him to contact Sacred Bones Records. The label signed Jones and matched him with producer Nic Jodoin of Black Lips, resulting in the sprawling, psych-steeped experimental rock of his 2020 debut The Mother Stone. That release quickly positioned him as a committed recording artist, a standing further solidified by the two-volume opus Gadzooks that followed across 2021 and 2022.
For the second chapter of Gadzooks he worked again with Jodoin, this time alongside Drew Erickson inside the historic Valentine Recording Studios in Los Angeles; the enigmatic single "Touchdown Yolk" led the way when Gadzooks, Vol. 2 surfaced in 2022. All three of his early albums were densely constructed, multi-instrumental creations realized entirely in the studio. Shifting course for his fourth LP, Jones formed a live band and wrote material expressly for group performance, adding string sections and extended prog-flavored passages that made Hey Gary, Hey Dawn, released in 2024, his most elaborate statement to date. To mark the album's arrival he and his musicians held a month-long residency in Austin before embarking on a wider tour.
