Biography
Fronted by songwriter David Skirving, California Snow Story crafts moody, dreamy indie pop. Skirving launched the project in 2001 upon leaving the Glaswegian twee pop band Camera Obscura. The group maintained a deliberate release schedule across subsequent decades, issuing material such as the 2016 album Some Other Places and the 2024 EP Christmas Dreams.
The act originated in 2001 and delivered its first EP, One Good Summer, via Shelflife during winter 2002. Following a contribution to another Shelflife compilation the next year, the project entered an extended hiatus of roughly three years. Activity resumed in 2006 with the addition of ex-Superété vocalist Sandra Belda Martinez and keyboardist Madoka Fukushima. The band’s debut full-length, Close to the Ocean, appeared in 2007; its follow-up arrived only in 2016. That album, Some Other Places, saw release in both the U.S. and Japan and marked the first appearance of bass player Yumi Yamaguchi. California Snow Story returned in 2024 with the Christmas Dreams EP on the independent imprints Shelflife and Galaxy Train. The collection spotlighted longtime collaborator Melanie Whittle alongside additional musicians, while the group simultaneously advanced work on a long-awaited third album.
