Born in 1942 in Scott, Arkansas, Leavy launched his performing life in gospel at sixteen. During 1969 he cut the potent southern blues “Cummins Prison Farm,” handling vocals and rhythm guitar while Robert Tanner supplied a standout solo. Calvin C. Brown, proprietor of Soul Beat Records, issued the track, which emerged as an unexpected success roughly twelve months later and was then acquired by Shelby Singleton Enterprises. Leavy continued to wax sides for Soul Beat and its sister imprint Acquarian, frequently joined by his brother Hosea on bass. Not long afterward he receded from view, with scant further news of his activities, even as the song itself entered the blues canon. The most recent accounts placed him on bass guitar in a gospel ensemble.
