Biography
Philadelphia-based duo Camp Candle characterizes its atmospheric yet grounded aesthetic as “swag-pop,” a style situated between chillwave, R&B, and indie pop. Their material confronts global hardships while sustaining an undercurrent of hope. Briana Mills and Mark Cave first crossed paths at an agricultural high school before commencing their partnership in 2014. Mills had previously issued indie folk and electronic pop as Hetepsa and Orange Neve, while Cave, recording as Nu Ra, arrived from a hip-hop milieu; the two felt an immediate rapport and soon designated Camp Candle their chief outlet. Three singles appeared in 2015, followed in 2016 by the eight-song EP ERE. The recordings attracted blog coverage and national college-radio rotation, prompting a signing to Manimal Vinyl that yielded the three-song EP Light in May 2017.
