Camp Freddy emerged in 2002 not as a conventional group or an informal jam collective but as an occasional gathering of friends who assembled simply to perform cover material for the pure enjoyment of rock & roll. The outfit took its name from a figure in Michael Caine’s film The Italian Job and revolved principally around guitarist/vocalist Billy Morrison, guitarist Dave Navarro, drummer Matt Sorum, vocalist Scott Weiland, vocalist Donovan Leitch, and bassist Chris Chaney, whose combined histories included stints with the Cult, Guns N’ Roses, Stone Temple Pilots, Jane’s Addiction, Velvet Revolver, Nancy Boy, Circus Diablo, and the Panic Channel.

While these musicians formed the steady nucleus, Camp Freddy shows regularly featured an ever-changing roster of high-profile guests whose cumulative appearances proved too numerous to catalog. Over the ensuing years the ensemble appeared at an eclectic array of events—among them celebrations hosted by Blender magazine and Grey Goose Vodka, the opening of the world’s largest strip club, benefit concerts, and clandestine local performances throughout Los Angeles—while also maintaining a weekly broadcast on L.A.’s Indie 103.1 FM. Their initial recordings surfaced in late 2006 with the contribution of two tracks to the Employee of the Month comedy soundtrack, one of which was the debut single, a version of the Cheap Trick classic “Surrender.”
