Biography
Originating in Keansburg, New Jersey, the emo-pop outfit Can't Swim operates under the direction of vocalist and songwriter Chris LoPorto. The group made its introduction in 2017 and later broadened its emotionally charged approach through the 2018 release This Too Won't Pass and the 2021 album Change of Plans, both issued via Pure Noise.
Chris LoPorto established Can't Swim during 2015 after stepping away from his prior work as a drummer across numerous groups, choosing instead to handle lead vocals, guitar, and songwriting duties for the new endeavor. Fellow musicians Danny Rico on drums, bassist Greg McDevitt, and additional guitarist Mike Sanchez completed the lineup and brought LoPorto's anthemic emo-pop material to life. The band focused on studio work ahead of any performances and issued its first EP, Death Deserves a Name, in early 2016. Touring occupied much of that year, after which the members recognized that live renditions required extra guitar to match the recorded intensity. Rico moved to third guitar while Andrea Morgan assumed the drum position. Their debut full-length, Fail You Again, arrived in March 2017, with the follow-up This Too Won't Pass appearing in late 2018. Michael Sichel replaced Morgan on drums, and the band put out the EP Foreign Language in October 2019, which included a contribution from Taking Back Sunday singer Adam Lazzara.
As the new decade began, Can't Swim maintained a steady output with the 2020 EPs When the Dust Settles and Someone Who Isn't Me. One year afterward came the full-length Change of Plans, marked by its more atmospheric production.
