Biography
Finland's Cantata Sangui emerged as a heavy metal band lacking any guitarists, prompting exclamations of "Heresy!" accompanied by the dramatic closure of a casket lid. Initial reactions of shock and skepticism give way once listeners encounter the potent, heavily distorted, and emphatically loud six-string simulation delivered by five-string bassist Tuomas Tunturituuli alongside four-string player Juha Vilhunen, who assumed the role in 2008 after Mika A.A. Hyytinen's extended tenure. The lineup reaches completion with lead singer Anna Pienimäki, male vocalist Kari Husa, keyboard and samples performer Hanna Sirola, and drummer Black Bolton, whose exclusive choice of blinding white attire sets him apart from his bandmates clad in ebony. Roots of the group trace back to 1998, yet only demo recordings materialized across the following ten years, as participants remained occupied with separate musical projects, particularly Enochian Crescent contributors Tunturituuli and Bolton. A contract with Season of Mist Records materialized in 2009, enabling the creation of the debut album On Rituals and Correspondence in Constructed Realities, whose avant-garde blend of doom, gothic, black, and progressive heavy metal gains added distinction through the total omission of guitars.
