Biography
Cappella Gabetta operates as a family venture built around cellist Sol Gabetta and her brother, Baroque violinist Andrés Gabetta, who serves as concertmaster for the small groups they assemble. The approach feels distinctive yet logical, since the cello can readily assume a leading position within Baroque vocal works, functioning as an engaged continuo participant whenever no standout solo line is available.
The ensemble came together in December 2010. At that point Sol Gabetta already enjoyed recognition for exceptional versatility, her repertoire stretching from the Baroque era through Shostakovich. Andrés Gabetta had established himself as a respected violinist through prior work with Baroque cellist and director Christophe Coin. Cappella Gabetta has performed at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris, the Theater an der Wien in Vienna, the Philharmonie in Berlin, the Tonhalle in Zurich, and the Musikhalle in Hamburg, as well as numerous other major venues and assorted festivals.
Collaborations with fellow musicians form the core of the group’s activities and stand out most clearly on disc. Three albums have appeared so far, the most recent two featuring prominent sopranos in Baroque repertoire: Vivica Genaux participated in a collection of arias by Handel and Hasse, while Cecilia Bartoli joined for the 2017 release Dolce Duello. From its inception the ensemble drew uncommon major-label attention for a Baroque project that often involves lesser-known works and occasional world premieres. The first two recordings came out on Sony Classical; Dolce Duello was issued by Decca.
Beyond Christophe Coin, concert partners have included soprano Nuria Rial, trumpeter Gabor Boldoczki, violinist Giuliano Carmignola, and Baroque recorder player Maurice Steger. Forthcoming engagements listed at present encompass tours alongside countertenors Valer Sabadus and Franco Fagioli, mandolinist Avi Avital, and sopranos Sunhae Im and Julia Lezhneva.
