Biography
Cappella Pratensis maintains its standing as a longstanding vocal ensemble devoted to Josquin Desprez and further Renaissance composers. Performances distinguish the group through its practice of reading directly from original Renaissance notation. Historical scholarship guides all interpretive decisions in both concerts and recordings. Its catalog now spans more than thirty years and features the 2024 Challenge Classics release The Feast of the Swan: A Renaissance Brotherhood at Table.
Ludy Vrijdag and Rebecca Stewart established the ensemble in the Netherlands in 1987; Stewart left in 2002, after which Stratton Bull assumed leadership in 2008. The name Cappella Pratensis echoes Josquin Desprez, whose surname renders as “of the meadow” in French and “pratensis” in Latin. Ten adult male singers constitute the core membership, with Bull also participating in the superius range. Bull’s direction has shaped the ensemble’s present identity, stressing research-based performance practice. Few other Renaissance vocal groups match Cappella Pratensis in singing from facsimiles of the original notation rather than modern editions. The debut album, Missa Gaudeamus - Josquin des Prez, appeared on the Jubal label. Since issuing Vivat Leo! Music for a Medici Pope in 2011—an album awarded the Diapason d’Or in France—the ensemble has recorded exclusively for Challenge Classics.
Concerts have taken the group across Western and Eastern Europe, the United States, and Colombia. From 2005 to 2007 it served as ensemble-in-residence at France’s Fondation Royaumont, presenting both performances and masterclasses. Festival appearances include regular engagements at the Early Music Festival in Utrecht. In 2009 a video documented a reconstructed original performance of Jacob Obrecht’s Missa de Sancto Donatiano, filmed on site in Bruges, Belgium. The 2023 recording of Obrecht’s Missa Maria zart received a prize; the work remains one of the longest and most technically demanding Renaissance masses. The Illustrious Brotherhood of Our Lady of 1318 commissioned Cappella Pratensis to record from its intact choirbooks spanning 1450–1600 under the “Den Bosch Choirbooks” heading. The fourth volume of that series appeared in 2024 on Challenge Classics as The Feast of the Swan: A Renaissance Brotherhood at Table. Several members hold teaching positions in leading university early-music programs.
