Biography
Garage rock trio Capsula came together in Buenos Aires, Argentina, during 1998. Their sound merged the South American psychedelia associated with Os Mutantes and the obscure groups featured on grey-market anthologies of 1960s singles from the region, alongside a dual enthusiasm for British glam rock—the band’s name itself drawn from a lyric in David Bowie’s “Space Oddity”—and American proto-punk outfits such as the Velvet Underground and the Stooges. Singer and guitarist Martin Guevara, bassist Coni Lisica, and drummer Oscar Alvarez issued their initial three albums on the domestic independent label La Nena. Standout tracks from 1999’s Sublime, 2000’s Yudoka, and 2001’s Ultimo Fragmento were gathered for the 2002 anthology Capsula, which introduced the band just as its brand of brash retro rock & roll gained prominence through groups like the Hives and the White Stripes. After moving from Buenos Aires to Bilbao, Spain, Capsula joined the Spanish independent Discos Liliputs and delivered their fourth album, Songs & Circuits, toward the end of 2006. Rising Mountains appeared next on the BCore Disc imprint in April 2009.
