Unverified reports from dubious outlets such as Hollywood Gazza T. Jabbar, Minister of Propaganda, portray Captain T alternately as a former CIA operative who turned to songwriting to reveal official secrets involving extraterrestrials and other covert operations, or simply as a satirical showman skilled in both sharp wit and fresh musical techniques. Shrouded in theatrical enigma, the background of Captain T and his associates evokes entries from the Official Conspiracy Theorists' Handbook. Among the more extravagant accounts are Madd Doctor’s supposed 1958 abduction by aliens from a military prison, followed by his reappearance three decades later showing no signs of aging, and the self-described exploits of bassist Matt Pichel, characterized in his own bio as an “international spy, playboy and millionaire who works with New York City's homeless when he's not busy saving the world from mass destruction.” Captain T’s first release, U.S. Aliens (1997), blends energetic techno-rock textures with assured vocals and inventive lyrical themes. At minimum, his arrival on the scene stands out for its resourceful deployment of shtick-driven rock.
