In 1974 the smooth single "Baby, Hang Up the Phone" placed Carl Graves inside the R&B Top 20. A native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Graves had earlier sung with Skylark, the band that also featured David Foster and vocalist Donny Gerard and that scored a number nine pop hit in 1973 with "Wildflower." Signed to A&M Records as a solo artist, he recorded under producer Spencer Proffer; "Baby, Hang Up the Phone" entered the R&B charts late that year and appeared on the self-titled album Carl Graves. The follow-up chart singles were the brisker "Heart Be Still," drawn from the album of the same name, and the Ariola America release "Sad Girl." Graves's voice is also present on Lee Oskar's 1997 album So Much in Love.
