Carlos Colla established himself as a prolific composer whose work has been interpreted by numerous leading Brazilian performers, while also serving as producer for Menudo and Luis Miguel during their Brazilian projects. His entry into the arts came through acting in the 1970s; he soon began supplying original music to the theatrical productions in which he appeared and later performed as a guitarist in venues around Rio’s Praça Mauá district. During this time he became a member of the band O Grupo on guitar and formed a creative partnership with fellow bandmate Maurício Duboc. Following an O Grupo engagement at Canecão, the pair were presented to Roberto Carlos, who commissioned a song written expressly for his own repertoire. Colla and Duboc responded with a cassette containing “Negra” and “Nome da Outra Música,” both of which Roberto Carlos subsequently recorded, thereby launching Colla’s enduring success as a songwriter. Among the many compositions that followed were “Falando Sério” and “A Namorada,” both cut by Roberto Carlos; “Dança do Coco” for Xuxa; “Hoje a Noite Não Tem Luar” for Legião Urbana; “Fogão de Lenha,” co-written with Maurício Duboc and Xororó and recorded by Chitãozinho e Xororó; “Pra Que Mentir,” created with Marcos Valle and taken up by Erasmo Carlos; “Sinto Muito,” written with Chico Buarque and recorded by Wanderléa; “Tô Deixando Você,” co-authored with Chico Roque and cut by Chitãozinho e Xororó; “Na Hora do Adeus,” penned with Chico Roque and Matogrosso and recorded by Matogrosso e Mathias; and “Doces Algemas,” composed with Nenéo and recorded by Wanderley Cardoso.
