Carmen stood out by fusing flamenco traditions with progressive rock. During extended instrumental sections the musicians further set themselves apart by dancing onstage, incorporating the resulting footwork directly into the music. The lineup consisted of Roberto Amaral on vocals and castanets, David Allen on guitar, his sister Angela Allen on keyboards, John Glascock on bass (who subsequently collaborated with Jethro Tull), and Paul Fenton on drums. Their style centered on energetic flamenco guitar lines supported by a robust rhythm section and understated keyboard textures. Dancing on a Cold Wind, their debut album, appeared in 1973 and included the 23-minute epic "Remembrances (Recuerdos de Espana)." Fandangos in Space followed in 1974. The quintet concluded its recording career with the 1975 release The Gypsies, an album noticeably more restrained than its predecessors.
