Carmina Juarez, daughter of conductor Benito Juarez and pianist Elizabeth Rangel Pinheiro, began musical training in early childhood through piano, flute, and choral singing. She joined the vocal group Beijo and, in 1988, traveled to Boston, MA, to attend the Berklee College of Music. After returning to Brazil, she took on coordination of the vocal technique department for the chorale at the University of São Paulo. Her debut CD, Arrasta a Sandália, appeared in 1966 on the Dabliú label. The follow-up, Tenho Saudade (2000), honored singer Elisinha Coelho by reinterpreting her classic repertory. In 1997 she took part in the show A Gema Do Novo alongside Itamar Assumpção, Paulinho Moska, Chico César, Monica Tomassi, Ná Ozzetti, João Marcelo Bôscoli, and Klébi. That year she also featured in TV Cultura (São Paulo)’s Ensaio special, a tribute to Paulinho Soledade. In the same year she contributed to Edson Natale’s CD Lavoro with the track “Naávu: Javassarê.”
