Born in 1970 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, Loftus pursued studies in Jazz Fundamentals along with acting and voice under Bill Pepper at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music. She launched her professional singing career in her native city in 1990. Recognition followed swiftly across Australia, after which she broadened both her skills and her following in the Far East through appearances in Hong Kong and additional venues. She relocated to Europe in 1994 and took up residence in London, England, the next year. From that point forward she cultivated a substantial following via performances at numerous nightclubs, among them Ronnie Scott’s, while also attracting listeners through well-received recordings. Loftus has identified Nina Simone as her earliest musical influence and integrates her background in acting to enrich her vocal work. Her lucid tone, occasionally deployed with deliberate blues inflections, aligns effectively with jazz requirements; she further distinguishes herself as a capable composer and lyricist. With the release of her second album, her rapidly developing abilities had become an asset to London’s jazz community. At the same time she grew restless within the genre’s narrower confines and, by 1998, was preparing a pop album.
