San Francisco outfit Carta drew from the aesthetic of 1990s indie rock when Kyle Monday and Jason Perez launched it as a studio endeavor in 2002. Efforts to build out a quartet led them through numerous transient musicians until bassist Ray Welter and drummer Sonny Culbertson locked in the lineup for the 2005 album The Glass Bottom Boat. Finding a record label required another two years, and Resonant only put out that debut in 2007, by which point both Perez and Culbertson had departed. Raj Ojha, drummer with Run & Return, and multi-instrumentalist Sacha Galvagna came aboard toward the end of the year, shifting focus to Index of Birds as the remaining founder Kyle Monday steered the project into atmospheric soundscapes and motorik pulses. Following the 2010 release, Gabriel Coan—previously with Continental and the Orange Peels—assumed drumming duties. Saint Marie Records issued the band's next effort, The Faults Follow, in 2013.
