Casey Dienel, a Massachusetts native skilled as a singer, songwriter, and pianist, first reached broad audiences by recording and touring as White Hinterland. She had previously issued Wind-Up Canary, a collection of jazz-tinged indie pop tracks, on the Hush Records imprint in 2006. Two years afterward she shifted direction, adopting the more ensemble-focused White Hinterland identity and earning strong reviews for three successive Dead Oceans releases that probed multiple angles of experimental, frequently synth-driven pop. With her third album, Baby, arriving in 2014, Dienel took on both recording and production duties herself, enlisting occasional outside musicians while functioning essentially alone. Following two independent singles in 2015 and 2016, she retired the White Hinterland name and issued Imitation of a Woman to Love in 2017 under her own byline.
