Catchpenny originated in Pittsburgh during 1994 as a quartet whose driving energy and melodic sensibility shaped an introspective brand of alternative rock. Throughout the 1990s the band endured repeated personnel shifts, so that by the close of the decade only two founding members remained: vocalist Michael Seven, born Michael Sirianni, and bassist Michael Henry. The independent release of Dajom on the Next label in 1999 featured Seven and Henry alongside guitarist Brian Ferrell, who had joined in 1997 as the group’s fourth guitarist, and drummer Jeff Gretz. Also in 1999 the band brought in Tim Hartman to replace Gretz on drums and added rhythm guitarist Jeff Inscho, thereby becoming a quintet.
