CC Dust originated in Olympia, Washington, where vocalist/artist/dancer Mary Jane Dunphe—previously of the energetic punk group Vexx—teamed with bassist/producer David Jacques. Their sound merges the danceable punk energy of DFA Records artists, the swooping drama of vintage 4AD bands, and abundant melodic New Order-style basslines, all elevated by Dunphe’s vocals that shift between growling and angelic delivery. The result anchors itself in earlier eras while receiving a contemporary recasting. The duo first surfaced on the 2015 cassette It Gets Weirder: A Compilation of Olympia Punk, contributing the song “Abra,” then issued the debut single “Shinkansen No. 1”/“New Ways” on Mystery?Club in August of 2016. One month later a self-titled five-song EP arrived via co-release from Perennial in the U.S. and Night School in the U.K.
