Biography
Caila Thompson-Hannant, a Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and producer, records ethereal electro-pop under the name Cecile Believe. Earlier, as Mozart's Sister, she blended synth pop with R&B; she adopted her new alias in 2018 and lent her talents to projects involving SOPHIE, Kero Kero Bonito, A.G. Cook, and additional artists. Across works such as the 2020 release Made in Heaven, she crafts sensual, atmospheric pop that seamlessly blends drum'n'bass, ambient textures, and dance elements.
Born in Vancouver, Caila Thompson-Hannant performed with multiple Montreal indie rock ensembles during the 2000s, among them Shapes and Sizes, Miracle Fortress, and Think About Life. She launched a solo career in 2011, issuing '80s-influenced pop under the Mozart's Sister banner. Following two EPs and two full-length albums—the final one being 2017's Field of Love on Arbutus—she relocated to Los Angeles and adopted the Cecile Believe pseudonym. She co-wrote and provided vocals for several songs on SOPHIE's 2018 album Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides while also supplying backup vocals for Kero Kero Bonito's TOTEP and Time 'n' Place. In 2019 she delivered remixes for Dizzy and Homeshake; the following year she appeared on tracks by Kane West (Kero Kero Bonito's Gus Lobban), Austra, and A.G. Cook. That same year she issued her debut EP as Cecile Believe, Made in Heaven, together with the mixtape Plucking a Cherry from the Void.
