Biography
Pianist Cédric Tiberghien maintains recognition across solo recitals, concerto appearances, and chamber settings while also building a solid profile as an accompanist. During the 2010s his work became especially prominent through an extensive collaboration with violinist Alina Ibragimova.
Born in France on May 5, 1975, Tiberghien spent his childhood in Noyon and started piano instruction there at age five under Michèle Perrier. At ten he moved to Paris; four years later he entered the Paris Conservatory, where he studied with Gérard Frémy. He received the institution’s Premier Prix at seventeen, and later that same year a performance at Ourskamp Abbey prompted his decision to pursue a professional career at the keyboard. A series of competition successes in the mid-1990s reached its peak with victory at the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud International Competition in Paris in 1998. Designation as a BBC New Generation Artist for the 2005–2007 period supplied further momentum. Since that time Tiberghien has maintained a steady schedule with leading orchestras worldwide, supported by a repertory encompassing sixty concertos. Engagements have taken him to ensembles without any special concentration in France, among them the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony in the 2010s. His solo recitals in cities such as New York, London, and Paris have centered on the standard keyboard literature stretching from Mozart through the early twentieth century.
Chamber activity has likewise occupied much of his schedule in the 2010s, including duo partnerships with Ibragimova, violist Antoine Tamestit, and cellist Pieter Wispelwey. He has also served as accompanist for singers such as soprano Sophie Karthäuser and baritone Stéphane Degout. Tiberghien’s recordings appear on the Harmonia Mundi, Wigmore Live, and Hyperion labels; in 2019 Hyperion released his album of violin sonatas by Franck and Louis Vierne, made with Ibragimova.
