What began as a solo endeavor by Lancaster, Pennsylvania's Carson Slovak—singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist—evolved into the complete grindcore ensemble known as Century. Beyond his musical pursuits, Slovak maintains a career as a graphic designer, crafting every visual element for the band's artwork and merchandise himself. Having previously played guitar in the alt-metal group Armsbendback, Slovak handled all aspects of Century's debut EP, which bears the band's name, in isolation. Upon departing Armsbendback, he committed to establishing Century as a proper band. The full-length debut album, Faith and Failure from 2006, featured contributions from guitarist Mike Giuliano, bassist Joshua Groah, and drummer Grant McFarland. Matthew Smith took over on drums prior to the record's issuance, distinguishing him from the Detroit musician of the same name who fronts Outrageous Cherry.
