Biography
Cerberus Shoal originated in 1994 with punk rock foundations and moved from Maine to Boston after assembling their first lineup of Caleb Mulkerin on guitar, Chriss Sutherland on bass and vocals, Tom Rogers on drums, and Josh Ogden on guitar. Before 1995 concluded, the quartet had already staged multiple performances at ABC No Rio, issued a self-titled EP, and completed a coast-to-coast American tour. Further roster shifts gradually steered the music toward a brighter, more restrained character. Kristen Hedges took over Ogden’s guitar and vocal duties while David Mulder joined on keyboards, resulting in the 1996 Tree Records release of the paired EPs Lighthouse in Athens Parts One and Two and And Farewell to Hightide..., both reflecting the band’s new direction. After Hedges left later that year, the two-song EP Elements of Structure/Permanence appeared, followed in 1997 by the single “Breathing Machine,” the combined recordings totaling fifty minutes. Mulder’s exit came just before another national tour, leading the group to borrow and then permanently enlist Thomas Kovaceic on guitar and vocals together with Tim Harbeson on keyboards and trumpet from Tarpigh. The revised lineup produced the 1999 album Homb and the mid-2000 release Crash My Moon Yacht.
